A Church for All People

Led by Dr. Ginny Smith

A Psychiatrist Explores the Connection Between Darkness and

Spiritual Growth by Gerald G. May, M.D

During these days of pandemic and stress, have you been asking yourself questions such as, where is God in all that is happening?  Has God left us to fend for ourselves?  What is God’s invitation to me in the midst of all that is going on?  Add any other questions you might have.  If so, I hope you will join us as we read and discuss a book that addresses questions such as these.  It’s written by Gerald G. May and is entitled The Dark Night of the Soul: A Psychiatrist Explores the Connection Between Darkness and Spiritual Growth.

The late Dr. May, one of the great spiritual teachers and writers of our time, will guide us in discovering how the dark “shadow” side of the true spiritual life has been trivialized and neglected to our serious detriment.  He will also be showing the ways in which a superficial and naively upbeat spirituality does not heal and enrich the soul.  Only the honest, sometimes difficult encounters with what Christian spirituality has called and described in helpful detail as “the dark night of the soul” can lead to true spiritual wholeness and an ever deepening relationship with God.

We will meet on Zoom from 2:00 – 3:30 PM on four (4) Tuesdays:  October 27, November 17, December 1 and 15.  To give some guidance in your reading, I will send out quotations and reflection questions a few days before our gathering and then a day or two before the meeting date, I will send you a Zoom invitation so you can connect with the call.

Interested?  Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  1.  Get a copy of the Dr. May’s book.
  2. Make sure you have Zoom on a computer, iPad, or iPhone
  3. Mark the dates on your calendar
  4. Send me your name and email address at so that I can put you on the list and email you the questions and Zoom invitation.

I look forward to hearing from you and “seeing” you on the screen.  Please email me, Ginny Smith,  at if you have any questions.
